We help birth more babies than any other health system in Western Washington, offering the tailored care that our patients want, need and deserve.
In light of the recent announcement by Virginia Mason Medical Center to close its downtown Seattle birth center next month, Providence Swedish wants to assure all expectant mothers and families in the community that we stand ready to provide the highest standard of pregnancy, childbirth and women’s health services at our Swedish First Hill (Seattle), Swedish Issaquah and Swedish Edmonds hospitals.
We understand that the closing of a facility can be unsettling for patients and their families. These decisions are not easy for organizations to make; it takes much discernment and evaluation. Swedish has had to make similar decisions in the past.

A legacy of care
We help birth more babies than any other health system in Western Washington. Last year, we welcomed nearly 10,000 babies at Swedish. We are continually astonished by and extremely proud of the number of lives our caregivers touch.
Every birth parent’s experience is different, and at Providence Swedish, we offer our patients the choice of a midwife, doula, OB-GYN or family medicine clinician to create the most personalized childbirth experience possible. We provide birthing parents with the tailored care that our patients want, need and deserve.
As a Level IV regional NICU at Swedish First Hill, we provide the highest level of neonatal services to families in this region. Our new Small Baby Unit focuses on delivering evidence-based, standardized care for some of our community’s smallest and most vulnerable babies.
Providence Swedish understands that no two pregnancies are alike, so our care is both high-touch and high-tech. We take care of some of the most fragile pregnant people, offering leading-edge care and the latest technology, but always focusing on the human connection and compassion essential to caring for babies and their families.
Support at Swedish
Central to our mission is our role as a cornerstone of our community. We regularly assess and adapt our services to meet the evolving needs of our patients. We recognize that Virginia Mason Medical Center’s recent decision to close the birth center was not taken lightly. But it’s more crucial than ever that families have access to quality facilities close to home.
“If you are affected by the closure of Virginia Mason’s birth facility, we offer several birthing centers in the greater Seattle area,” said Elizabeth Wako, M.D., Swedish President and CEO. “Providence Swedish is a reliable and caring alternative for any families impacted. Whenever I’m out in the community, one of the comments I most often hear once they learn I lead Swedish are ‘Oh! I had my baby there’ or ‘I was born at Swedish.’ Our team is working diligently to provide the necessary resources and support to ensure continuity of care. We invite you to learn more about our facilities and experience the exceptional care that our birth centers are known for.”
